Domestic abuse is a pattern of behaviour that is used by someone to control or obtain power over their partner or ex-partner. It is never the fault of the person who is experiencing it, and it is a crime. Research shows that many people across workplaces lack any real understanding of what domestic abuse really is and its impact on survivors. 

The main aim of this workshop was to build an understanding of what we mean by Domestic Abuse and why it is so complex. 

This domestic abuse awareness workshop  included:

  • What is domestic abuse?
  • Barriers to Leaving
  • The impact on survivors and their health
  • How to respond

The MARAC Process

The purpose of the session was to introduce attendees to MARAC (Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conference); what it is, what are its aims, and to outline the MARAC processes in Lewisham, introduce the Safe Lives DASH Risk Indicator Checklist and Risk assessment, and to Inform attendees on how they can refer to Lewisham MARAC.

ENT conditions presenting in General Practice

4 December 2024

Presenter:  ENT consultant Sonna Ifeacho, Consultant ENT Surgeon at Whipps Cross Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust and Lead Consultant for Communitas Clinics; with sub-specialty interests in Rhinology & Facial Plastic Surgery and Paediatric Otolaryngology. This session provided an overview of the common ENT conditions presenting in General Practice including the ears, nose, throat and paediatric cases too. The talk covered pertinent history-taking, clinical findings to note and clear management plans that can be implemented prior to referral for specialist input.

Lewisham Referral system for COPD and Asthma

This is the second of two training sessions delivered by our local mental health pharmacists from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

Attendance was crucial for all Community Provider Organisation staff involved in the care of residents and clients prescribed clozapine.

Antipsychotic depots require specialised knowledge for effective monitoring and support of clients on these medications. This training was essential to ensure the best personal outcomes for those in your care.

Management of patients on clozapine in Supported Living

This was the first of two training sessions being delivered by our local mental health pharmacists from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust on clozapine and depot injections for supported-living staff teams in Lewisham.

Attendance was crucial for all Community Provider Organisation staff involved in the care of residents and clients prescribed clozapine. Clozapine requires specialised knowledge for effective monitoring and management, and this training was essential to ensure the best personal outcomes for those in your care.

Session 1 comprised:

  • Understanding clozapine and it's uses
  • Best practices to support clients on clozapine
  • Recognising and responding to adverse reactions
  • Effective communication with healthcare professionals

We strongly encouraged supported-living provider organisations to collaborate with local specialist mental health services to ensure their staff receive this vital training.

Megan McClintock will present on the LeDeR,  a service improvement programme for people with a learning disability and more recently autistic people.

LeDeR was established in 2017 and is funded by NHS England and NHS Improvement. Cancer Screening

One of the key ambitions in the NHS LTP for cancer is by 2028, 75% of people with cancer will be diagnosed at an early stage (stage one or two).

Cancer screening tests and improving participation rates in screening are critical to achieving this ambition. Screening tests are  used to detect pre-cancer or early-stage cancer in asymptomatic individuals so that timely diagnosis and early treatment can be offered. The aim of a cancer screening programme is either to reduce mortality and morbidity in a population by early detection and early treatment of a cancer (for example, breast screening) or to reduce the incidence of a cancer by identifying and treating its precursors (such as cervical).

Foot Health - supporting self-care and podiatry referral pathways

The Lewisham Foot Health Service provides a wide range of foot health services across a number of community clinics in Lewisham. These include assessment, diagnosis, treatment, education and advice on disease and deformities related to the foot and lower limb. These include nail pathologies, painful skin lesions, musculoskeletal disorders and foot ulceration.

This L&L Session covered:

  • What to refer to the podiatry service
  • How to support those where a podiatry referral is not suitable
  • How to access information to help patients with minor foot problems
  • The foot in diabetes and PAD - key messages for primary care professionals

Lewisham General Practice Garden Party Event

 Building on the success of the Lewisham General Practice Excellence Awards 2023, One Health Lewisham, Lewisham CEPN Training Hub and the Lewisham ICB primary care team hosted a summer garden party event with BBQ and lawn games. This was to, once again, bring together General Practice colleagues from across the borough and take some time out to recognise and celebrate all the hard work and dedication that staff put in on a daily basis.

The event took place in the beautiful grounds of Morden College, Blackheath, SE3 0PW and  each organisation had their own allocation of tickets.

Eliminating structural racism in workplaces

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Trainer: Martin Crow Lewisham Safeguarding Adults Board

This session was advertised on behalf of Fiona J Mitchell, Nurse Consultant Adult Safeguarding Designate, South East London ICB

This training explored why FGM is practised, the different types, the psycho-sexual and psychological impact as well as the social cultural context and prevalence.

FGM is recognised internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. Additionally, it is considered as Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) and reflects a deep and entrenched form of discrimination. The practice also violates; a person's rights to health, security, physical integrity, the right to be free from torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and the right to life in situations when the procedure results in death. The legal context will also be addressed as FGM is illegal in the UK. 

The session also addressed provision for supporting women who have undergone FGM. It dealt with the importance of cultural competence and how it impacts delivery of support services for women from BME communities. 

The session was participatory and interactive with opportunities for sharing experiences through discussions and viewing videos as applicable. 

Places were limited and were allocated, on a first-come-first-served basis.  Primary Care Clinicians were given priority for places, but were encouraged to book as soon as possible to secure a place

This interactive and intensive session provided valuable tools to manage your own wellbeing in a world where we focus on the wellbeing of others.

Insomnia

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, insomnia is defined as a combination of difficulty obtaining sufficient sleep and dissatisfaction with sleep combined with a significant negative impact on daytime functioning. Chronic insomnia is defined as difficulty initiating and/or maintaining sleep on at least three nights per week for at least three months, despite adequate opportunity to sleep. Insomnia is a condition of overactive brain activity during sleep, and studies have shown that areas of the brain associated with wakefulness remain more active during sleep in patients with insomnia.

According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, around a third of adults in Western countries experience sleep problems at least once a week with 6-10% fulfilling the criteria for insomnia disorder. This Lunch and Learn session covered:

Interpreting Services in General Practice

The session was aimed at all practice staff who are responsible for booking and/or using interpreting services or responsible for ensuring patients have access to and are informed about interpreting services.

Interpreting services in general practice aims to support patients for who English is not their first language and/or who are deaf and require interpreting support when accessing their GP practice.

Interpreting services also assist patients and practices in: 

  • Care navigation, sign-posting and improved access to health services 
  • Ensure that the services practices offer, are safe, well-led and provide an equitable service offer in line with CQC requirements.

Do you know what interpreting services are available? Do you know how to book an interpreter? Does your patient know about what services are available to them? Community Connections Lewisham (CCL)

About this Event

Community Connections Lewisham (CCL) is a Social Prescribing service, supporting anyone living in the borough (aged 18+) who is looking for help to improve their health and wellbeing. Social Prescribing services connect Lewisham residents to the services, support, activities and groups that will help them to feel healthier and happier. We know many things contribute to a person’s health and wellbeing, and we help individuals to find and access the things that will have a positive impact on their life. 

CCL support a number of different services, including 1-1 brief intervention work for individuals, 1-1 Wellbeing Plans where clients are supported for up to 8 weeks, a befriending service, a transport service and community development support for groups in the borough. CCL also support Lewisham residents with Lived Experience of prostate cancer through their 'Prostate Cancer Pathway Project'; this service supports individuals affected by prostate cancer and support them over a number of months to find and access support, services and activities. 

This session comprised a short presentation about social prescribing, what it is and how it can benefit individuals and professionals alike; who Community Connections Lewisham are, and the different services we offer (including the 'Prostate Cancer Pathway Project';  how to make a referral and get the most from CCL.

Substance Misuse Identification and Management in Lewisham

In this session the presenters provided an overview of the substance misuse treatment system in Lewisham, including primary and secondary care, community and inpatient. The session described pathways for patients who have difficulties with alcohol, illicit drugs, prescription and over-the-counter medicines. There were opportunities for participants to describe their own experiences with caring for people who misuse alcohol or other drugs, and to explore what training and support would better equip them in this area. Future sessions will be offered on specific topics identified on the day.
